Prayer focus December 2020

Even if we cannot gather in person

Emmanuel, God with us.

Even if some Christmas traditions have had to go

Emmanuel, God with us.

Even if we might not be able to hug family and friends

Emmanuel, God with us.

Even if we cannot sing Christmas carols beside each other

Emmanuel, God with us.

Even if Christmas cheer is harder this year

Emmanuel, God with us.

(Prayer written by Christian Aid Scotland.)

We know that after an incredibly difficult and challenging year, this Christmas will be very different from those in the past. With all four UK nations trying to work out a common approach, they are looking at ways to enable families to celebrate Christmas together safely for a few days bringing some respite and a psychological lift from the hard slog of the pandemic .

Pray that people will observe and follow the new Coronavirus restrictions and rules for socialising, travelling and staying safe and that infection rates will decline before the Christmas period.

Pray for our NHS, those seriously ill or unwell and all those being cared for in our nursing homes. Staff under extreme pressure to keep themselves and others safe.

We give thanks for the good news of a vaccine.

Pray for the lonely, anxious, afraid and vulnerable; and those still shielding. Lord be their protector and close companion.

Comfort the bereaved and grieving with your love, peace and grace.

Pray for the hungry and homeless. Give thanks for the lifesaving services of food banks and care shelters

Pray for our economy, the financial health of businesses and the protection of jobs.

Pray for the unemployed and furloughed. Be their strength, shield and provision.

Pray for our children, young people and teaching staff at schools and university. Keep them safe and well, nurture them and help them to grow in their learning and enjoy being with their friends.

“You are here, moving in our midst, I worship you.

You are here working in this place, I worship you.

You are

Way Maker, Miracle Worker,

Promise Keeper, Light in the Darkness,

My God, that is who you are.”

With God all things are possible. Matthew 19: 26

December 1st is “World AIDS Day” pray for all those living with HIV or Aids, and those who care for them.

Pray for our troubled world as the pandemic spreads, and for all those living in crisis, lost or in need. Shine the light of your Kingdom into the darkness of our world.

For unto us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9 v6

Pray for the church, our church leaders and family as we go forward in these challenging times. Guide us with your vision, wisdom and strength as we build your church so that all may know the love and hope of Jesus.

Pray for SU Scotland and its leaders as they find new ways and opportunities to help children and young people encounter Jesus and the good news of the Bible.

Thank you for being “Emmanuel” God with us and giving us Jesus the greatest gift of all.

God of all our yesterdays, todays and tomorrows

Made real in our gathering and our distancing

bring hope,

bring peace,

bring joy,

bring love. Amen
